Where Traditions Started

Cuz'n Vinny's Nonna Rose was born in 1887 in Palermo, Italy. She left Italy  at 12 years old with her parents and many siblings via Naples on the Ship SS Patria on September 20, 1899, arriving at Ellis Island on October 6, 1899.   The family moved to and remained in the Phillipsburg, NJ and Easton, PA area.  

Vinny fondly remembers his paternal Italian history, such as lasagna with hard boiled eggs.  This first recorded version dates back to 14th century Naples. "My nonna made homemade pappardelle (wide flat pasta) with bolognese almost every Sunday, and is my personal favorite". 

Vinny's mother, Josie, is Syrian.  His maternal grandmother Selma, born in 1898 in Aleppo, Syria, came to the United States via Ellis Island in 1920, she was 22 years old.  He remembers red sauce with potatoes, meat and string beans which he enjoys to this day.
